Lewisburg, PA - Small town charm with a college vibe
Along the banks of the western branch of the Susquehanna River is a Pennsylvania town offering a mix of old and new. In Lewisburg, there are interesting places to shop, eat, and walk. The shops on Market Street offer a wide range of options catering to college students and others. Lewisburg is home to Bucknell University and owes a lot of its success as a town to the university.
College students frequent the downtown area as it is only about a five minute walk from the south side of campus. The Barnes and Noble college bookstore is also downtown housed in an old dynamite factory. And, the university owns a number of buildings downtown and pays property taxes on all of them. One such building is the one screen Campus Theatre that has been in continuous operation since January 1941. As stated on its website, it is “one of the last of a dwindling number of single screen art deco movie palaces in the country.” The theatre shows an impressive range of movies, both current and past releases.
Walk down Market Street to view historic buildings that house a number of great gift shops, such as The Mercantile and Retrah. For candy lovers make sure to visit Purity Candy, offering a wide selection of handmade chocolates. Walk south from Market Street through the historical district to see some magnificent homes from the 1800s, particularly on South Third Street and South Front Street.
There are number of good places to eat in town. A great to grab a quick breakfast is All Star Bagels that serves traditional New York style bagels. Grams on Third Street is also an excellent choice for breakfast if you want something more hearty. The Town Tavern and Bull Run Tap House offer good pub style food among with a great selection of beers on draft. In the evening, Lewisburg Hotel is also a good place to hang out and it doesn’t typically get frequented by college students, except on Thursday night wing night. The hotel also offers seating in the bar area and a traditional dining room. For more romantic or upscale dining choices, try Elizabeth’s. The restaurant serves a seasonal menu.
